THE ART OF JIU-JITSU

Many people assume all martial arts are the same. Not all martial arts are created equal. There isn't a better business bureau of martial arts schools. Many gyms are run by self proclaimed Black Belts that have no legitimate lineage. My Jiu-Jitsu lineage runs all the way back to Carlson Gracie.

Jiu-Jitsu is one of the most complex and difficult martial arts to learn taking the average person a minimum of 10 years to earn the rank of black belt. There is also no way for a child to earn a black belt. The minimum age to earn one is 18.

Jiu-jitsu is a melting pot of arts consisting of wrestling, judo, and submission grappling.

To simplify this process:

- All Self Defense Scenarios usually start Standing

I. Take Down or Throw

II. Pass the Legs/ Pass the Guard

III. Work to keep opponent Flat with a series of Pins (Side Control, Knee on Belly,

North/South)

IV. Work to Acquire a Dominant Position (Mount, or Rear Mount/ Back Control) and

then Ideally Control and Finish with a Submission (Linear or Rotational Joint

Manipulation or Strangle)

Now thats if everything goes as planned. Sometimes you may be caught by surprise and taken down or end up on the receiving end of a sucker punch which adds a step or two.

IB. Taken Down

IIB. Defend from your Back by Using Your Layers of Defense (Legs/ Guard) and

Look to get a Sweep (Reversal from Bottom to Top)

II. Pass the Legs/ Pass the Guard

III. Work to keep opponent Flat with a series of Pins (Side Control, Knee on Belly,

North/South)

IV. Work to Acquire a Dominant Position (Mount, or Rear Mount/ Back Control) and

then Ideally Control and Finish with a Submission (Linear or Rotational Joint.

Manipulation or Strangle)
